Fish on the Line

Snook are the rockstars of inshore fishing. These hard-fighting fish love to hang around mangroves and docks. They're known for explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps. Spring and fall are prime times to target snook, but they're around all year in Cape Coral.

Grey Snapper, also called mangrove snapper, are the perfect fish for teaching kids. They're abundant, eager to bite, and tasty too! These fish hang around structure and can be caught year-round. Watching a kid's face light up when they feel that first tap-tap-tap of a snapper bite is priceless.

Tarpon, the "Silver King," is the fish of a lifetime. These massive, prehistoric-looking fish can grow over 100 pounds and put on an amazing aerial show when hooked. Late spring and early summer are the best times to target tarpon in our area. Even if we don't land one, just seeing these giants roll at the surface is unforgettable.

Redfish are another inshore favorite. These copper-colored beauties are known for their distinctive spot near the tail. They love to cruise the flats and will happily take a live bait or artificial lure. Fall is prime time for redfish, but we catch them year-round in Cape Coral.

Blacktip Sharks give kids a thrilling fight without the intimidation factor of larger shark species. These speedy predators are common in our waters and often put on a show with impressive jumps. Summer is the best time to target blacktips, but they're around most of the year. Safety is our top priority when handling sharks, and we'll teach proper catch-and-release techniques.

Blacktip Shark

Blacktip sharks are a real thrill to catch around Cape Coral. These speedy predators usually run about 4-5 feet long, but can get up to 9 feet. You'll find them cruising the shallows near beaches, hanging around artificial reefs, or patrolling muddy bays. Summer's prime time for blacktips, when water temps heat up. They're known for their acrobatic jumps - these guys can leap 20 feet out of the water! That makes for an exciting fight when you hook one. Blacktips are pretty sociable, so where there's one, there's often more. They go nuts for oily fish like mackerel or sardines. If you're targeting them, use a heavy braided line that can handle 20-50 pounds. Circle hooks are key to keep them on the line when they start thrashing. Here's a local tip: chum the water with some mashed-up baitfish to get them in a feeding mood. Once they catch that scent, they'll come investigating. Just be ready for action - these sharks don't mess around when they decide to bite!

Grey Snapper

Grey Snapper, also called Mangrove Snapper, are a favorite target for our young anglers. These crafty fish typically hang out around structures like docks, mangroves, and reefs. Most inshore catches run 1-3 pounds, but offshore you can land some real bruisers up to 20 pounds. They're opportunistic feeders, so patience is key when fishing for them. Year-round residents here, Grey Snapper really heat up in summer and fall. Kids love targeting them because they put up a scrappy fight on light tackle. Their white, flaky meat makes for some excellent eating too. To hook one, we'll often use live shrimp on a 4J hook. Here's a local trick: hook the shrimp through the tail instead of the head to keep it lively longer. Let it sink near structure and wait for that telltale tug. When you feel it, don't jerk - just reel steadily to set the hook. Night fishing can be especially productive since these guys are more active after dark. It's a great chance for the kids to experience some exciting nocturnal action on the water.

Redfish

Redfish are a local favorite here in Cape Coral. These copper-colored beauties, with their distinctive tail spot, typically run 20-30 inches in our waters. You'll find them prowling the shallows - grass flats, mangrove edges, and oyster bars are prime spots. They're here year-round, but fall brings some of the best action as they school up. Reds are fun to catch because they put up a solid fight and aren't too picky about bait. They'll hit everything from live shrimp to artificial lures. What really gets anglers excited is sight-fishing for them in clear, shallow water. Watching a big red chase down your lure is a rush. These fish are also great eating - mild, flaky meat that's perfect for grilling or blackening. Just remember, we practice catch-and-release with the big breeders over 27 inches. Here's a local tip: On sunny days, look for their tails sticking up as they root around in shallow water. Cast ahead of them and slowly drag your bait into their path. Gets 'em every time.

Snook

Snook are one of the coolest fish we target around here. These sleek predators hang out in mangroves, grass flats, and near shore reefs. Most run 1-2 feet long, but the big girls can hit 4 feet and 30+ pounds. They're ambush hunters with a serious burst of speed, so be ready when one hits. Spring through fall is prime time, especially around the new and full moons. That's when they gather up to spawn in passes and inlets. The males bump the females to release eggs - it's quite a sight. Folks love chasing snook for their hard fights and acrobatic jumps. They're also excellent eating when in season. We usually fish 'em with soft plastics, topwaters, or live bait like pilchards. Here's a local tip: Focus on mangrove shorelines on an incoming tide. The snook stack up to ambush bait getting pushed in. Cast parallel to the trees and work your lure tight to the roots. When you feel that thump, hang on!

Snook

Tarpon

Tarpon are some of the most exciting gamefish we target here in Cape Coral. These silver giants can reach over 6 feet long and 100+ pounds, known for their spectacular aerial acrobatics when hooked. You'll find them in our coastal waters, passes, and even up into brackish rivers. Spring through fall is prime tarpon season, with May and June being the peak. We usually look for them rolling on the surface or use sonar to spot schools in deeper channels. Live bait like pinfish or crabs work great, but nothing beats the thrill of getting one to eat a fly. The fight is what makes tarpon special - they'll make blistering runs and launch completely out of the water, sometimes several times. Landing a big one is a true test of an angler's skill and endurance. While we always release tarpon, just connecting with one of these prehistoric-looking fish is unforgettable. My top tip: when you see that silver flash, wait until you feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook hard. Patience pays off with these smart, wary fish.
